ESD Filament

This category of 3D printer filament includes a selection of filaments with specific static or magnetic properties. Indeed, plastics are generally known to be insulating, and most 3D printing filaments will have this characteristic.

For certain applications, it is preferable to use so-called ESD Safe materials (Electro Static Discharge) to avoid accumulating electrostatic charges that could damage the most sensitive electronic equipment. Thus, ESD filaments are capable of slowly discharging these charges by creating slight conductivity.

A so-called magneto-detectable filament can be detected by all types of magnetic detectors; however, it will not be conductive.

Manufacturers Nanovia and Polymaker, notably with the Polymaker Fiberon™ PETG-ESD Black, offer high-performance ESD filament solutions. Choose the one best suited to your needs, and when in doubt, opt for the PETG version for greater simplicity.

How to choose your ESD or MDT filament?

The principle is ultimately similar to that of composite materials. The plastic matrix used to produce the ESD or MDT filament will determine the main characteristics. Chemical resistance and food-grade compliance for PETG ESD or MDT versions, greater strength for ABS versions.

Be aware of the composition of these filaments; they are generally abrasive and may require the use of a reinforced nozzle and a larger diameter.
